Before you compare quotes

Kit, build or design and construct?

Brisbane shed companies sell three different things. Knowing which one you're being quoted on is the easiest way to avoid comparing apples with oranges.

Kit / supply only

Engineered frame, cladding, doors and drawings delivered to site.

Your job: You organise the slab, erection, approvals and a licensed builder if the work is over $3,300.

Supply & build

The company supplies the kit and its own team or contractors build it.

Your job: Check whether the slab and approvals are in the price, and whose QBCC licence covers the build.

Design & construct (turnkey)

One company handles design, engineering, approvals, slab and construction through to handover.

Your job: Usual for commercial and industrial work. Compare inclusions line by line, not just the total.

Local considerations

Building a shed in Bundaberg

Bundaberg sits on the cyclone line

On the National Construction Code wind region map, cyclonic Region C on the Queensland coast ends at about 25°S. Bundaberg and Bargara sit just north of that line, while Childers, Hervey Bay and Maryborough sit south of it in Region B. Because Bundaberg is so close to the boundary, confirm the wind region on each quote's engineering, and check that every builder priced the same region and terrain category.

Almost every substantial shed needs approval

Queensland's Building Regulation only exempts sheds up to 10 m², 2.4 m high and 5 m on any side, and that exemption doesn't apply to work in Wind Region C. Bundaberg Regional Council and Fraser Coast Regional Council both stopped doing building certification in 2015, so approval comes from a private certifier.

Check Bundaberg flood mapping first

The Burnett River peaked at 9.53 m at Bundaberg in January 2013, the city's largest recorded flood, and council's flood mapping is based on that event. Get a free Flood Planning Control Property Report from council's interactive mapping before settling on a shed site or floor level.

Licence check

How to check a shed builder's QBCC licence

  1. Ask for the licence number

In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 needs a QBCC licence. Get the number and the licensee's name in writing with your quote.

  2. Check the class covers your shed

The 'Sheds, carports and garages' trade licence only covers Class 10a buildings up to 100 m². Bigger sheds and commercial buildings need a builder licence class, such as Builder – Low Rise or Builder – Open.

  3. Search the QBCC register

Confirm the licence is current and matches the company on your contract.

    Open the QBCC licence search
  4. Check home warranty on residential jobs

Residential outbuildings with a roof, like a garage or large shed, generally need QBCC Home Warranty Insurance when the work is over $3,300. Commercial work and owner-builder work aren't covered.

FAQ

Shed builders in Bundaberg: common questions

How much does a large shed cost in Bundaberg?

Published kit prices start around $30,000 for a 9 × 24 m farm and machinery shed and around $98,000 for a 36 × 15 m commercial shed, before the slab and erection. We didn't find published Bundaberg or Fraser Coast prices, so these are national or Queensland figures. Commercial buildings with offices, services and external works are commonly priced at $1,000 to $1,500 per m².

Do I need council approval for a shed in Bundaberg or Hervey Bay?

Usually, yes. Queensland only exempts very small sheds: up to 10 m² in area, 2.4 m high and no longer than 5 m on any side, and not in cyclonic Wind Region C. Neither Bundaberg Regional Council nor Fraser Coast Regional Council does building certification any more, so a private certifier issues the approval. Larger sheds and some zones can need additional approvals, so check with your certifier.

What licence should a Bundaberg shed builder hold?

Building work over $3,300 in Queensland needs a QBCC licence. The 'Sheds, carports and garages' trade licence only covers sheds up to 100 m², so larger rural, commercial and industrial sheds need a builder licence class. Check the number on the QBCC register before you sign.

What does ShedSafe accreditation mean?

ShedSafe is a third-party accreditation program run by the Australian Steel Institute. It reviews a shed company’s engineering, steel products and site specification against the National Construction Code. Where we show ShedSafe, we checked the company against the ShedSafe seller register.

What's the difference between supply only and supply and build?

Supply only means you receive an engineered kit and arrange the slab, erection and approvals yourself. Supply and build adds construction. Design and construct means one company runs everything from design to handover, which is normal for commercial work.

How did you choose these builders?

We searched for shed companies across Bundaberg, Childers, Gin Gin, Hervey Bay and Maryborough, found 42, and removed garden shed retailers, online kit sellers, home builders, network pages with no local detail and sites we couldn't check. The 9 listed are genuine local operators with published evidence of the shed work they do. Google ratings don't decide who is listed.

Do builders pay to be listed?

No. Nobody on this page has paid to be listed or to be placed. If we add paid placements later they will be clearly labelled as sponsored and won't change the editorial order.

Got a shed project in Bundaberg?

Tell us the size, budget and timing. We'll pass it to up to three suitable builders.
